What is Acupuncture and why Should I Try it?

Hormone Edition

Acupuncture is a  natural and holistic approach to hormonal imbalance that has been practiced by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) specialists for centuries. A hormonal imbalance can lead to a wide range of symptoms and health issues,  however acupuncture can balance hormones by stimulating specific points on the body associated with hormonal regulation.

The hormones regulate bodily functions by binding to specific receptors on the cells, controlling functions like growth and development, metabolism, reproduction, mood regulation, sleep-wake cycles, and stress response, are produced by various glands in the body including the pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands, ovaries (in women), and testes (in men).

Common Hormonal imbalances

Hormonal imbalances can cause a wide range of symptoms, including irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings, weight gain or loss, fatigue, hair loss, insomnia, and fertility issues.

Hormonal imbalances include:

  • Adrenal Fatigue when the adrenal glands are unable to produce enough cortisol in response to chronic stress.
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – a hormonal disorder characterized by high levels of androgens (male hormones) and insulin resistance, affecting women of reproductive age.
  • Hyperthyroidism: A condition where the thyroid gland produces an excess of thyroid hormones, leading to symptoms such as weight loss, rapid heartbeat, and anxiety.
  • Hypothyroidism: A condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and depression.
  • Menopause: The natural decline in reproductive hormones in women typically occurring in their late 40s or early 50s, but which can produce some annoying side-effects.

How can Acupuncture balance Hormones?

By releasing blockages in the meridians which allow the flow of Qi or life force in the body, acupuncture provides relief from hormonal imbalances. Once a person has been treated by a qualified acupuncturist they can expect:

  • Regular menstrual cycles due to balanced hormone levels and improved blood flow to the reproductive organs.
  • Improved fertility as increased blood flow to the reproductive organs helps regulate hormone levels, and reduces stress.
  • Reduced PMS symptoms, such as mood swings, bloating, and breast tenderness.
  • Better thyroid function as thyroid hormone levels are regulated.
  • Reduced stress and anxiety as relaxation elevates levels of serotonin.
  • Easing of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings.

Why does acupuncture work?

The acupuncture approach is natural and holistic, relying on your body to balance itself through stimulating the flow of Qi and releasing blockages, rather than through pills that may upset the delicate natural balance. Numerous thin needles will be inserted into various points after your qualified acupuncturist has discussed your symptoms, issues, lifestyle and diet. The treatments may be augmented with some traditional medicine, electro-acupuncture involving a light electrical current passed through the needles to stimulate energy,  or moxibustion which involves the burning of dried herbs near the patient.

Scientific studies from all over the world indicate that acupuncture works with  researchers recording measurable improvements in patients who have undergone treatment.

Our qualified TCM doctors at Zhou Wellness will tailor make a plan to restore your hormonal balance.
