Acupuncture for Digestive Disorders

Acupuncture for Digestive Disorders

Millions of people worldwide suffer with digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux, and ulcerative colitis, that affect their quality of life. Many factors can contribute to digestive disorders, including diet, stress, medication, and medical conditions.

Fortunately, acupuncture for digestive disorders has been proven through various studies to help alleviate symptoms associated with those disorders such as nausea, bloating, and constipation. Acupuncturists usually spend many years studying the exact points on the body that correspond with the internal organs. They work on restoring the body’s natural balance of energy through inserting superfine stainless steel needles into these points.

Combined with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) of herbal remedies, acupuncture assists in promoting digestive health. Regular exercise also plays a role in relieving constipation and bloating as it helps stimulate the muscles in the digestive tract, for healthy bowel movements.

Bloating can be caused by a variety of factors including overeating, eating too quickly, swallowing air while eating or drinking, gas production in the digestive system, and certain medical conditions such as IBS or constipation. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may help relieve bloating by improving digestion, reducing inflammation, and balancing energy flow in the body.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects the large intestine, and is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. Although the exact cause of IBS is unknown, it is believed to result from a combination of factors including abnormal muscle contractions in the intestines, increased sensitivity to pain in the digestive system, and changes in the gut microbiome. Acupuncture may help reduce symptoms such as the abdominal pain and bloating associated with IBS,  according to studies.

Acid reflux, occurs when stomach acid flows into the esophagus causing heartburn, chest pain, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing. The main cause of acid reflux is a weakened lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which allows stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. Treatment typically involves lifestyle changes with some studies suggesting that acupuncture may help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for those with this disorder.

The chronic inflammatory bowel disease known as ulcerative colitis affects the lining of the colon and rectum. Patients experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea (often with blood or pus), rectal bleeding, urgency to have a bowel movement, and weight loss. Although the exact cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown, it is believed to involve an abnormal immune response in the digestive tract with some studies citing acupuncture as being helpful for ulcerative colitis.

Constipation can be caused by a low-fiber diet, dehydration, lack of physical activity, certain medications, hormonal changes, and some medical conditions. It can be chronic or occur at intervals. Acupuncture and TCM may help relieve constipation by reducing inflammation, and balancing hormones.
